FAQ's

What is OSHA 30 General Industry Training?

OSHA 30 General Industry Training is a 30-hour course that serves as a primer for General Industry occupational safety and health. It provides an introduction to the federal agency tasked with protecting workplace safety and health and covers the most common safety hazards that apply to the workforce.

This specialized training is offered as an online safety training for workers. While there is a variety of training available, general industry training helps employees recognize their safety responsibility to keep the jobsite safe.

Who Needs OSHA 30 General Industry Training?

Some employers, states, or local jurisdictions will require OSHA Outreach courses for workers in medium- to high-risk industries. However, even if it's not required, these courses can be beneficial for improving your personal safety on the job.

The 30-hour Outreach course is intended for people with supervisory responsibilities, and General Industry covers everything except construction and maritime jobs. In other words, it's designed for industries like manufacturing, factory operations, warehousing and distribution, health care, and more.

What's Covered In OSHA 30 General Industry Training?

All OSHA 30 General Industry courses include an introduction to OSHA and worker's rights, how to manage workplace safety and health as a supervisor, emergency action plans, electrical safety, personal protective equipment, walking and working surfaces, hazard communication, and materials handling.

Instructors have some discretion on what other safety and health topics they cover. Most have to be chosen from a list of OSHA-approved electives, like machine guarding or fall protection.

There is additional training for construction available with our 30-hour construction training. This course will only cover general industry requirements.

When Does the OSHA 30 Card Expire?

OSHA considers its Outreach courses to be valid forever, because they're optional at the federal level. However, if your employers, state, county, or city require you to earn an OSHA 30 card, they probably have a rule about how frequently you refresh your training. It's typically 2-3 years, but it varies.

The 30-hour card differs from the 10-hour cards and shows certification of completion of the advanced training which is provided in the 30-hour course. While the 10-hour course will help recognize common health hazards, the 30-hour training for general industry provides additional health training to ensure a healthy workplace and can help prevent occupational injury.
